Suicide anyone?

The Virgin Suicides (1999)
My Rating: 5/10

I was interested in watching Sofia Coppola’s first film. I mean, what do you do on your first film anyway? Dale and I always joke around that all filmmakers should make a suicide flick just to get it out of the way. Its so… writer-y. But you do it, and shelve it. Not actually ‘do it’. But Sofia did it. And outside the very interesting concept of five sisters committing suicide because of the religious confinement of her Jesus Freak Mother (played by an old Kathleen Turner – what ever happened to this sex symbol from Body Heat anyway? Well, see her here in a not so sexy symbol kind of way) there wasn’t that much to the movie. All I was waiting for was how, and when they were all going to kill themselves. And THAT was anticlimatic in itself. And then it was over. The ‘boys’ who were obsessed with the girls were great. But they really weren’t in it all that much. Actually, other boys were which didn’t make all that much sense to me. If anyone SHOULD watch this it’s those religious fanatics with kids who they treat in a similar matter. Other than that, its just something that leads you on with no payoff at the end. Good music though!

Favorite scene: The whole prom sequence. Not just for the scenes but for the music played over the scenes.

Tennis anyone?

What’s up with all the tennis? I’ve seen Wimbledon, then there was tennis in Squid and the Whale and now Matchpoint. I need to buy a racket.

Match Point (2005)
My Rating: 8/10

Woody Allen has done some great RomComs as we all know. He has also done some drama and here’s one you might not want to miss. The acting, the setting, and the story were all excellent. It’s almost like the ‘Scott Peterson‘ movie with a twist. I hope that doesn’t ruin it for anyone who wants to watch it. I haven’t seen Jonathan Rhys-Meyers since Bend it like Beckam and I really didn’t care for him in that. Fortunately, this was a better, stronger, and deeper role and he played it extremely well! I’m not a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson except for her role in Lost in Translation. But she did a great job in this movie and showed off her skills.

Favorite scene: The ‘boy meets girl’ scene where Nola (Scarlett Johansson) and Chris (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) first meet at the ping pong table. You knew it was going to get dangerous right after that.

Precious are few…

Donna: What do you guys want to eat for dinner tonight?

Bella (age 3): Food.

Like there’s another option?
